Many other games have wonderful (some may even say
MUCH superior) soundtracks, but no theme in all of
video games is so universally known as that of Super
Mario Brothers. It's simple, catchy, and for many
brings back fond memories. Even those who do not play
video games recognize the sounds of the most famous
video game character in the world! Therefore, it
really comes as no surprise that there have been quite
a few Super Mario soundtracks released. However NONE,
not a single one, can truly compare with this 2 CD
set!
This soundtrack is quite special in a number of ways.
First of all, disc one is completely arranged in a
wonderful jazzy style, where live instruments as well
as synthesizers blend together beautifully. The
feeling you get from listening to the music is
bliss... The themes are catchy and joyful, much like
in the games, but do not sound childish nor silly. In
fact, after listening to this disc you'll say "more!
give me more!" Since this set came out years ago, you
won't get some of the more recent and catchy Mario
tunes, but what you do get is some of the most
memorable and enjoyable music ever released by
Nintendo (yes, that is saying quite a lot)!
Now, before delving into the second disc, let me say
that I have never been a fan of MIDI. Some claim that
MIDI is the most pure game music there is, but frankly
I don't care. I like game music that is grand and
magnificent (such as found in orchestral
arrangements). However, even I must admit that
listening to the original Super Mario theme made me
smile. If you are a purist or have a soft spot for
such music, then you will love this second disc,
because you get MIDI, and lots of it! There are a
total of 96 tracks on this second CD...96!! However,
to be honest, the last 13 or so tracks are a waste in
my opinion, as they are nothing more than sound
effects. (I fail to see how anyone could enjoy
listening to sound effects). This one fault aside, the
second CD gives you the most complete Super Mario
soundtrack currently available. You get the complete
music to the original Super Mario Brothers, Super
Mario 3, and Super Mario World. This is almost a
perfect CD (if only the powers that be would have
included the soundtrack to Super Mario 2 instead of
wasting space with sound effects).
The first CD alone makes finding this soundtrack a
worthwhile investment. The second CD makes this set an
absolute must if you are a Mario fan, and even if you
are not, chances are you will really enjoy this rare
album... yes, like most game soundtracks, it's quite
rare. I have seen this go for over $200 on eBay (when
the auction included the 'rare' hologram card), but
more recently prices have been between $100-$150 for
mint condition CDs. Worth the price? Of course it is!
Do you want it? Of course you do! Will you love it?
I'm betting you will!
Bottom Line: A+ |
